BULLETIN BOARD

OUR MISSION

Le Grand Conseil de la Nation Waban-Aki Inc., founded in 1979, is a Tribal Council grouping the Abenaki bands Odanak and Wôlinak.

His primary mission, elaborated in December 1993, was revised and corrected at the request of the Administration Council, by a working committee comprised of members of Odanak and Wôlinak in March 1997.

From the eight goals set out in the letters patent of the Waban-Aki Corporation Inc., the appointed committee identified three main elements of its mission; representation, development and administration.

HISTORY

Of Algonquin[1] origin, the name for the Waban-Aki Nation comes from the terms “W8ban” (white light) and “Aki” (land), meaning, according to anthropologist Frank. G. Speck “People of the rising sun” or “People from the East”.  Following the different ages and usages, the name was spelled many different ways. However today, the name “Abenaki” is most often used to identify Odanak and Wôlinak community members, who make up the Waban-Aki Nation in Quebec.
